Background

This photo shows the groundbreaking ceremony for the Northwest Library construction. The facility was groundbreaking in another way as well, in that it was the first library in Ohio and only the second in the country to be built and operated by two different library systems, the Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) and the Worthington Public Library (WPL).

More than 300 people attended the ceremony, filling the makeshift parking lot at the site and causing the police to direct motorists to park along nearby residential streets. The keynote speaker at the event was Rep. Pat Tiberi, R-Columbus. Other speakers included W. Charles Curley and Charlotte Kessler, presidents of the boards of trustees of the Worthington and Columbus libraries, respectively; CML Director Larry Black and WPL Director Meribah Mansfield; and Bonnie Beth Mitchell, who became the library’s first manager.

The Northwest Library officially opened on April 16, 1996.
