Background

The Worthington Female Seminary was chartered by the Methodists in 1839. Its curriculum contained both academic subjects and household arts. Education was an important part of Worthington's economic life in the nineteenth century. Women's education was considered vital to society and the family.
The Worthington Female Seminary building was used in the 1870's by the Ohio Central Normal School for teacher education. After its closing, the Seminary building was used as a residential hotel and later for apartments. The building was demolished in 1963.
