Background

The entire student body of Worthington School, located on West Granville Road (Rt. 161) is pictured here. Grades 1-12 attended Worthington School from 1874-1893, until a separate high school was built. A few of the children in the first row are identified as Carrie Vest Long (2nd from left), Frank Welling (3rd from left), Cornelia Vest Corbin (8th from right) and Morgan Milne (9th from right).

This picture was probably taken in warm weather, as many students have no shoes. Shoes were expensive, and many rural children only had one pair, to be worn in the winter. Bare feet were the rule in the summertime.
