Worthington Human Relations Council Advertisement
Basic details
Background
This full page advertisement of the Worthington Human Relations Council appeared in the Worthington News December 24, 1964. The organization was founded in 1963. Promotion of equal opportunity for use and ownership of real property was one of the council's goals. Persons of African-American descent were often discouraged from purchasing homes in predominately white suburban areas. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 protected the rights of a person to seek employment, vote, and use hotels, parks, restaurants, and other public places. The first national open housing legislation of the 20th century, prohibiting discrimination in the sale or rental of most housing in the United States, followed four years later with the Civil Rights Act of 1968.
