Background

This program from 1854 lists the order of exercises at the ceremony to confer degrees at the Worthington Female Seminary. Ten young ladies are listed as speakers; Flora A. Andrews, Ada M. Comstock, Mary C. Gard, Mary F. Dillon, Julietta Skeels, Laura M. Maynard, Elizabeth N. Burr, Roxana L. Gay, Jane E. Comstock and Martha P Goode.

The seminary's charter was granted on March 9, 1839, making it the first female seminary of the Methodist Church in what was then considered the "West." The building was constructed in 1842 on the west side of High Street on the Methodist Church property. Classes were held on the first floor and offered boarding on the upper floors for students from around Ohio and beyond. Following the establishment of the Ohio Wesleyan Female College in 1853, the Worthington Female Seminary lost support, which led to its closing in 1857.
