Worthington Columbus and Sarah Wright Lewis

This photograph captures Worthington Columbus Lewis (b. 1859, d. 1950) and wife Sarah Wright Lewis (b. 1860, d. 1927) riding in an open carriage.

Sarah Wright was born to Horatio and Harriet Thompson Wright, and is the granddaughter of Potter Wright and Lovisa Maynard and great-granddaughter of Alexander Morrison and William Thompson, all early residents of Worthington. She was raised in the Wright residence on the southeast corner of Granville Road and Morning Street, now known as Sharon Memorial Hall. On October 5th, 1897, Sarah Wright married Worthington C. Lewis in a ceremony at St. John’s Episcopal Church. Shortly after their marriage, Sarah became a member of the Worthington Methodist Church, where she was a very active member over the course of her life.

Worthington C. Lewis was the son of Elias Lewis Sr. (b.1786, d. 1884) and Eliza Paramore Lewis (b. 1820). His grandfather Jedadiah Lewis was an early Worthington pioneer, immigrating to the area from Connecticut in 1806. He received his education in Worthington, attending Worthington Medical College, and was a graduate of Chase Normal School. He served as the Mayor of Worthington from 1902 to 1905, also served on the Worthington Village Council, as the president of the Water Board, and as Justice of the Peace. He was a trustee and Sunday School Superintendent for Worthington Methodist Church. W.C. Lewis was also a member of the New England Lodge No. 4, the I.O.O.F., the Eastern Star, and the Chamber of Commerce.

W.C. Lewis married three times, first to Minnie Lorinda Brelsford Lewis (b. 1859, d. 1895) in 1883, second to Sarah Wright Lewis (b. 1860, d. 1927) in 1897, and lastly to Iva "Ivy" Belle Davis Lewis (b. 1875, d. 1954).
