Background
These two letters were written to William M. Johnson in Milan, Ohio from his parents, Orange and Achsa Johnson in Worthington, Ohio. The first letter is from Johnson's father. He is responding to Johnson's request for advice about a problem he is having with one of the faculty at school. His father encourages Johnson to endure through the end of the term and reminds him to behave respectfully. Johnson's father goes on to tell his son to mind who he speaks to about the situation so as not to complicate matters. He concludes the letter by telling Johnson that if he cannot make it to the end of the term, he must find another school to attend. The second letter is from Johnson's mother and simply states that he should remain until the end of the term. She reminds him to watch his temper and to act with good judgment.
William M. Johnson was the son of Orange and Achsa (Maynard) Johnson. He was born in 1818 and died in 1840.
Orange Johnson (b. February 7, 1790 - d. November 28, 1876), was a comb maker by trade from Connecticut. Johnson migrated to Ohio in 1814, attracted to the Worthington Manufacturing Company, friends and family.
Achsa Johnson was born Achsa Maynard on April 7, 1791. She was the daughter of Moses Maynard. In 1815, she married Orange Johnson (b. February 7, 1790 - d. November 28, 1876) a comb maker by trade from Connecticut.
