Background

This photograph depicts a railroad tower south of Granville Road (Route 161) prior to 1900. The tower contained mechanical signals for the north and southbound trains.

The cyclists are enjoying one of the 1890's most popular recreations, bicycling. The safety bicycle, with wheels of equal size, was first mass produced in 1889. Women were especially attracted to cycling, as it offered new freedoms in mobility and dress. Songs, poems, and editorials espoused the bicycle and the social changes it brought.
