Basic details
Background
In this photograph from 1955, Mary Armstrong (b. 1915, d. 2007) and Vance Smith stand in front of a new Worthington Historical Society museum display housed in the Sharon Memorial Hall. Armstrong was a founding member of the Historical Society as well as its first president. Vance Smith served as chairman of Worthington’s Sesquicentennial celebration in 1953.
The Worthington Historical Society was founded in 1955 and opened this museum in the former home of the Horace Wright family. The marble fireplace reflects Victorian tastes, as the Wright residence was built in 1861.
The museum remained in the building until the Society opened the Orange Johnson House to the public in 1972. The charcoal portrait on the fireplace depicts Olive Loring, a local milliner from early Worthington, and can be seen on display at the Orange Johnson House today.
