Background

Mark Russell (b. 1880, d. 1967) was an artist and designer. He was schooled at the Art Students League and worked as a designer for the Von Gerichten Art Glass Company in New York. He designed windows for the Broad Street Presbyterian Church and the LeVeque Tower in Columbus, Ohio. He was an art instructor at Columbus Art School, now the Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD), and the Columbus School for Girls. The Russell House at 5807 N. High Street was purchased by Mark and Mary Russell in 1919. The Russells purchased three acres of land surrounded the house, populated the property with gardens, and named it Green Gables.
