Background

This photograph was found in an old trunk by Frank Corbin and donated to the Worthington Historical Society. Written on the back side of the photo is: "Mrs. Ann Asbury (Wells); Oliver; Gay; and Claude (No relation to us [Corbins] - found in old trunk) Wells owned property on S.W. Corner Square)". According to "Histories of Structures" by Bob & Jennie McCormick, Ann Asbury (b. 1842, d. 1919), who was a widow, purchased part of lot 81 facing Pearl St. (now Oxford) in 1901. In the 1910 census, Ann Asbury was listed as a dressmaker. She and her husband Dr. Thomas Asbury had three sons, Norman Gay (b. 1874, d. 1944), Oliver (b. 1877, d, 1957), and Claude (b. 1881, d. 1955). It is possible that the young woman pictured in the center is either Ada Asbury, married to Claude or Emma Johnson Asbury, married to Oliver with one of their children. In the 1910 census, Claude resided in Sharon Township on Wilson Pike with his young family and was a laborer on a farm. The same year, Norman Gay Asbury resided in Worthington on Pearl Street with his mother and worked as a gas fitter in buildings, according to the census. Oliver was married to Emma Johnson of Worthington and lived in Columbus.
