Basic details
Background
This is a photograph of Orange Johnson (b.February 7, 1790-d.November 28, 1876), Worthington comb maker and entrepreneur who later became a successful manufacturer and banker. The portrait was produced by the Whitehurst Gallery in Washington D.C., which was owned and operated by Jesse Harrison, daguerreotypist, photographer and entrepreneur.
Tintypes and daguerrotypes were wildly popular during the 19th century. Portraiture was within the reach of everybody with the invention of these easily made and reproduced likenesses. Traveling photographers and photographic studios were present in the smallest town.
