May Day Celebration
Basic details
Background
A May Day celebration at the Worthington High School athletics field is pictured here. May Day customs including dancing around a decorated pole known as the Maypole are rooted in the Roman festival of Flora the goddess of spring and Floralia the festival of flowers.
The Worthington High School athletic field was created and federally funded in 1935 as a project of the WPA (Works Progress Administration, a.k.a. Works Projects Administration), under the administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Worthington resident, L. P. Patin was the chief engineer of the WPA in Worthington's district. The new athletic field included a football field, quarter mile cinder track, regulation sized baseball diamond and tennis courts.
