Background

This letter was written to Orange and Achsa Johnson who were visiting Mansfield, Connecticut from their daughter, Mary Johnson. Johnson writes to inform her parents of the household news while they have been away. First, she states how much she is enjoying being the"matron and mistress of the household." She goes on to discuss some business transactions that have taken place and that there was some discrepancy about payment and she informed the customers that they would have to wait to settle matters until her parents returned. Johnson then relates her feelings about the new housemaid and suggests that her parents bring back a gift for the housemaid to inspire her to be more motivated. Lastly, she discusses the state of the farm, commenting on the sheep, corn and the apple orchard.
