Background
This letter to Mary Johnson of Wothington, Ohio from Leander Holmes of Fremont House, Chicago was written in response to a miscommunication between the two of them. They both we informed by different acquaintances that the correspondence between them was ill advised as they both were involved with other people. He claims that he heard she was to be married in the winter and responds to her belief that he was courting another woman. In the end, he apologizes for any confusion his last letter may have caused and hopes that everything has been resolved.
Mary was daughter of one of Worthington's founders, Orange Johnson and wife Achsa (Maynard) Johnson. She married Francis Sessions on August 18, 1847. The Sessions were interested in promoting art and art instruction in Columbus. The Sessions art collection formed a basis for the Columbus Museum of Art collection.
Little is known about Leander Holmes other than he and Mary had a brief correspondence.
