Background

This letter was written to Mary Johnson of Worthington, Ohio from Evaline P. Smith of Trenton, New Jersey. Smith was once a resident of Worthington, Ohio, teaching music at the Worthington Female Seminary. Her sister Harriette Smith Kidder was the principal of the Female in Seminary before her wedding to Rev. Daniel Kidder. In the letter, Smith talks about a trip she took in the company of Mary Johnson's parents, Orange and Achsa. She asks about other news from Worthington, and inquires about several old acquaintances from the Worthington Female Seminary. She asks Johnson to send her regards to several people. She also requests the Trustees, presumably at the Seminary, pay a note she left in the care of Mr. Johnson at the time of her departure. At the conclusion, she asks Johnson to write to her.

Mary was daughter of one of Worthington's founders, Orange Johnson and wife Achsa (Maynard) Johnson. She married Francis Sessions on August 18, 1847. The Sessions were interested in promoting art and art instruction in Columbus. The Sessions art collection formed a basis for the Columbus Museum of Art collection.
