Background

This letter was written to Mary Johnson of Worthington, Ohio from Charles B. Stickney of Seneca County, Ohio. According to the letter, the two met while traveling in a stagecoach. They did not have much communication during the trip as Johnson was ill, but is appears as though Johnson wrote to him once she was home. Stickney begins the letter with some recollection of their trip. He spends the remainder of the letter relating his hope that he and Johnson can carry on their correspondence and that he can secure her "continued confidence as a favored friend."

Mary was daughter of one of Worthington's founders, Orange Johnson and wife Achsa (Maynard) Johnson. She married Francis Sessions on August 18, 1847.

Charles Stickney had met Mary Johnson and her father, Orange, while on a coach returning from a trip they had taken to the east. Charles B. Stickney and Mary continued a correspondence for a while.
