Letter to James Moreland of Henderson, Kentucky from Mary Johnson of Worthington, Ohio
Basic details
Background
In this letter written to James Moreland of Henderson, Kentucky from Mary Johnson of Worthington, Ohio, Johnson voices her regret for not responding quickly to Moreland's last letter. She tells him that she has been away but promises to be more timely with her letters in the future. She then goes on to commiserate with Moreland over the loss of his sister. She writes very poetically about the passing of her brother and the inevitability of death. Before closing the letter, she invites him to visit Worthington.
Mary was daughter of one of Worthington's founders, Orange Johnson and wife Achsa (Maynard) Johnson. She married Francis Sessions on August 18, 1847.
James Moreland was one of Mary Johnson's suitors. It appears from their correspondence that they were engaged for a time but the engagement was broken off.
