Background

"The Gladiator'' was a newspaper published in Worthington from 1887 to 1888 by Ezekiel Mettles. The office for the Gladiator was located in the Goodrich Block on the southwest corner of Main (High) Street and the Public Square.

This issue from May 17th, 1888 includes a local news column and advertisements from local businesses. Articles pertaining to local news appear on page three. There is a mention that snow fell on Monday, that Jennie Snow was moving to Tennessee and a family reunion at the Flynn home north of Worthington in honor of Mrs. Flynn’s birthday. An advertisement was placed by J. D. Boardman for “Two Heavy Draft Mares and a good Roadster”.

Local advertisers include O. Johnson, M.D.; W. F. Griswold, notary and civil engineer; F. E. Sharp, news depot and stationery; and R. W. [Whit] Evans, stoneware and tinware. Numerous fictional stories, adages and advice columns fill the rest of the four page paper.
