Gladiator Newspaper from March 8th, 1888

"The Gladiator'' was a newspaper published in Worthington from 1887 to 1888 by Ezekiel Mettles. The office for the Gladiator was located in the Goodrich Block on the southwest corner of Main (High) Street and the Public Square.

This issue from March 8th, 1888 includes a local news column and advertisements from local businesses. There is an advice column titled “What Causes Hard Time.” on the front page. The second page contains a biography of Louisa May Alcott and an article titled “Ignorant of Housewifery”, which describes expected gender roles prevailing at the time of publication.

Articles pertaining to local news appear on page three. Some of the items included are as follows: "Sugar -making is now in order", "Miss Edith Wright, after a severe illness of three weeks, has returned to her school"; "Miss Nanna Stickney is home from her school..."; "Miss Nellie Wright has returned home, after teaching at her sister Edith's school for three weeks"; "Miss Emma Gilbert of Angola, Ind. is here visiting her relatives. After an absence of eleven years.."; "Mr. Martin Mullen, an old resident of this place, ...was in the village...."; "a lodge of I.G.O.T. was initiated at this place..."; and a note about the start of "The Crayon Club" with participation by Jennie & Gertrude Gilbert and Mary and Hattie Griswold.
