Background

"The Gladiator" was a newspaper published in Worthington from 1887 to 1888 by Ezekiel Mettles. The office for the Gladiator was located in the Goodrich Block on the southwest corner of Main (High) Street and the Public Square. Pages one and two of the newspaper contain advertisements including several for Worthington businesses, along with state and national news and short columns.

Articles pertaining to local news appear on page three. One note reads, "the old Tuller building on Main Street has been thoroughly repaired and repainted. It looks as pretty now as a 16-yr old maiden with a new frock." Another note states, "Frank R. Main has sold his store to Mr. Guy Fay who will continue the business at the old stand." A death notice announces the passing of Lewis Johnson on January 7th, 1888 "at the residence of his son Henry, near Flint, of typhoid pneumonia." He was married to Pamela Thompson. Lastly, an obituary for Williard E. Case, son of Hector Case, Esq, age 26, appears. It indicates he was married to Jennie Wright and brother of James C. Case.

Advertisements in this issue include "O. Johnson, M.D., Worthington, Ohio," "W.F. Griswold, Notary Public and Civil Engineer, Worthington, Ohio," and "R. W. Evans, dealer in stoves and tinware in Worthington."
