Dan Lauer and Joe Cousins Standing Inside Jubilee Grocery Store

Joe Cousins, who was manager of the store, is shown holding a packaged turkey. The store donated 100 turkeys to the Worthington Community Service Committee and the American Legion Leasure-Blackston Post 239, as part of the groups’ drive to collect food for needy families during the holiday season. Students at Worthington Schools led a canned food drive that was also part of the donation, and the groups used cash donations from businesses and individuals to buy fresh fruit, vegetables and meat to supplement the donations.

From 1968 to 2003, the nonprofit Worthington Community Service Committee was dedicated to helping those in need in the Worthington School District. An article in the January 22, 2003 Worthington News (SNP) commemorates the group’s nearly 35-year efforts, from care packages at the holidays and providing year-round food assistance to paying doctor and utility bills.

The Jubilee store operated at the southeast corner of North Street at High Street from 1992 to 2006. The site had been a grocery store since 1959, when A&P opened a new store at the site. The site was later a Super Duper before becoming a Jubilee store. After Jubilee closed in 2006, the site was demolished for a new CVS building.
