Background

Francis C. Sessions was the husband of Mary Johnson Sessions, daughter of Worthington founder Orange Johnson and wife Achsa. The Sessions were interested in promoting art and art instruction in Columbus. In 1879 Francis Sessions donated a room for the founding of the Columbus Art School. Sessions provided for the founding of the Sessions Art Academy and museum from his estate prior to his death in 1892. Mary outlived Francis by 27 years, dying in 1919, leaving an estate valued at one million dollars. In 1931 an Art Gallery was built on the East Broad Street grounds of the Sessions home.
