Background

This bill, dated January 1st, 1860, was provided by Dr. D. Case of Columbus, Ohio to Mr. (John) Malcolm Gilbert (b. 1832, d. 1920) of Worthington, Ohio for "medical attendance and medicines" from May 22nd, 1859 through July 9th, 1859. The fee for services was $1.50.

Gilbert was born to parents Ezra and Martha Hart Gilbert in Worthington, Ohio. He married Lemora Griswold, from the third generation of Griswolds in Worthington, in 1857. They were parents to five children. Census records from 1850 and 1860 indicate that Mr. Gilbert was a cooper by trade, and later records list him as a farmer. The couple built a home at 17 East New England Avenue, facing High Street, and reportedly incorporated a previously standing structure that was once the home of R. W. Cowles. Dr. D. Case was located at High and Third Streets in 1850, and was also a boarder at Mrs. Cowles in Columbus.
