Admission Ticket

In the early 20th century, a women's Shakespeare study club known as the Fortnightly Club supported the Worthington Reading Room and Library by hosting special events to benefit the Library. The first of these was held on February 14, 1902 in the home of Mrs. Bessie Herrman, a club member. An account of the event reports that her home was lit by a number of candles and those working were dressed in costumes "as if they had walked out of an old picture." This event raised $25 for the Library with the club voting to make a small remembrance of the maid who answered the door. While the exact date and function of the particular ticket depicted here is not known, the ticket probably dates to the time period of 1902-1908. The meeting minutes of the Fortnightly Club in the Worthington Public Library archives indicate that fund raising events for the Reading Room and Library were held regularly during this time. The mission of the club was "to stimulate its members." Its motto was: "Who does the best his circumstances allows, does well, and acts nobly; angels could do no more."
