From 1835 until 1885, the Village of Worthington appointed volunteer fire wardens to respond to fires with buckets and ladders. In 1885, the village passed an ordinance appointing three members of the Village Council to serve annually on a fire safety committee, in charge of all fire apparatuses and safety measures.

In October 1916, the Village Council formally established an all-volunteer Worthington Fire Department, including a fire chief.

In 1931, Sharon Township also established a fire department, which in 1944 assumed all fire control responsibility in Worthington and Sharon Township, as the Worthington Fire Department was disbanded.

In 1994, the City established the Worthington Division of Fire & EMS and the personnel and emergency equipment from Sharon Township migrated to operate this new organization.
