Background

This letter was written to Mary Johnson of Worthington, Ohio from Charles Stickney of Republic, Ohio. This is Stickney's first letter to Johnson. He begins the letter by reminding her that they met on a coach when she was traveling with her father from Columbus to Worthington. He then asks if they might begin a correspondence and says that he understands that it is a bit presumptuous given that they have only briefly met. He explains that he is visiting his brother and does not know when he might be leaving. He hopes to hear from her at some point, even if it is just to offer friendship and no correspondence.

Mary was daughter of one of Worthington's founders, Orange Johnson and wife Achsa (Maynard) Johnson. She married Francis Sessions on August 18, 1847.

Charles Stickney had met Mary Johnson and her father, Orange, while on a coach returning from a trip they had taken to the east. Charles and Mary continued a correspondence for a while.
