Background

In this letter written to Mary Johnson of Worthington, Ohio from Emily Beckwith of Somerset, Ohio, Beckwith laments that Johnson has not responded to her last letter and hopes that it is not to suggest that they are no longer friends. Beckwith went to school with Johnson before moving to Somerset and spends most of the letter inquiring about old friends. Before concluding, she gives some news of life in Somerset and asks Johnson to please write.

Mary was daughter of one of Worthington's founders, Orange Johnson and wife Achsa (Maynard) Johnson. She married Francis Sessions on August 18, 1847. The Sessions were interested in promoting art and art instruction in Columbus.

Little is known of Emily Beckwith other than what can be learned from her correspondence with Mary Johnson. They wrote several letters back and forth.
