Background
This receipt was issued on July 1st, 1894 in Worthington, Ohio to Mr. & Mrs. G. W. Smith for their subscription pledge of $1.50 to the Ohio Anti-Saloon League. The receipt was signed by Reverend Norman N. Badger, who served as Rector of St. John's Episcopal Church at the time. The Ohio Anti-Saloon League was founded in May of 1893 in Oberlin, Ohio with the goal of reducing alcohol consumption and promoting laws that would close bars, taverns and saloons.
