Background

This Valentine Love Knot Poem was made by Rachel P. Cooke and sent to George Harlow Griswold.

Valentine's Day has a long tradition, dating from the Middle Ages. The exchange of gifts and love letters was an important part of courtship and marriage. During the late 1700's and early 1800's, the exchange of cards and letters began to supplant expensive gifts.
In the United States, many of the designs were influenced by the fraktur of the Pennsylvania Germans. The Love-knot was a popular design. The intricate artwork and wording required careful work, showing the earnestness of the maker's affections.
